Happy Guru Purnima - the day we celebrate the teachers in our lives
Two years ago I spent Guru Purnima, the full moon of July, and the day each year that is dedicated to the celebration of our teachers in life, at the Art of Living International Centre outside of Shawinigan, Quebec.
It was a powerful time for me as I was navigating deep transformation in my life, and was able to connect deeply with myself and my guru, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. After days of meditation and reflection, we emerged from silence feeling new and full. We celebrated with dance, delicious food, and amazing company. That night I swam in the lake with the full moon reflecting on the water and Guru Ji on a boat nearby with some of my dearest friends. I could not have been happier.
This year, I spent the morning with my mom hanging out in the kitchen. I have had quiet moments resting my head on her lap as she strokes my hair, and moments crying in her car as we park in the beautiful outskirts of town talking through where my brain has been. It's so powerful to be seen by someone, and my mom is that person. She loves me more than anyone in this world, and so spending this holy morning with her means the world to me.
I went to the bush (forest) with my dad a few days ago to see our company's work in action, and to see what makes my dad feel whole and satisfied everyday. After years of seeing him stress sitting in his office, it was incredibly refreshing to see him joyful, and excited showing me the bunchers, trucks, and lumber we are hauling. Our Foreman, Bill, said to me when my dad was in another room, 'it is a true honour an privilege to work with your dad'. I felt so humbled in that moment. And so proud to be Yadvinder Minhas' daughter.
Late last night my dad told me when I come home I give him a big boost of energy. I things that's the greatest compliment I've ever received (alongside my mom's unrelenting support for me).
I love my parents so deeply, and this year I get to spend Guru Purnima with them. I am the luckiest person.
Ma and Papa, thank you for all that you've done and continue to do for me. I love you with every part of my being, and will continue to work to make you proud.
